Amsterdam is famous for many reasons, and while not all off them appeal to everybody, visitors of all kinds are sure to find what they are looking for in this dynamic and vibrant city. Aesthetically speaking, Amsterdam is in a league of its own. During the 17th century Amsterdam was in its ‘Golden Age’ and was officially the wealthiest city in the world. This newly wealthy port city invested huge amounts of money into infrastructure; building rows of beautiful townhouses, along with the intricate system of canals and the many brilliant squares that attract tourists from all over the world. Luckily for us, this 17th century architectural style has remained virtually unchanged for the last four hundred years.

It is something akin to a time-warp, wandering down the Damrack main street with its rows of colourful shops. Stopping in Leidseplein plaza to have a quick look at the crazy street performer who is sure to displaying his skills, or just taking a moment out to marvel at the architecture of the famous Dam Square. Otherwise you could take in a day of culture with the incredible amount of great museums, including Anne Frank’s House, the Rijksmuseum and the famous Van Gough exhibit.

Of course if it’s a little bit of a wilder time you’re after - you’ve stumbled upon the right city. Amsterdam, as I’m sure we’re all well aware, is famously a place that’s not shy about legalising a thing or two. The city’s red light district is arguably the most famous in the world, and day or night it is there to cater for the more ‘exotic’ interests of locals and tourists alike. If you’re not averse to the occasional venture into the world of mild narcotics, Amsterdam has no shortage of ‘Coffeeshops’ where anybody over the age of eighteen can go and smoke the days and nights away…. or even choose from a selection of interesting baked goods.

Amsterdam is a large city with an urban population of over a million people; though with its quiet streets, ridiculous amount of bicycles and abundance of parks & squares, it retains a cosy - small town feel. So whether you’re a culture vulture looking for some amazing museums and quaint old streets, a reveller in the market for a weekend of excess and indulgence; or somewhere in between, and simply searching for a great place to enjoy a few Grolsch beers and a bit of an explore… Amsterdam is a fantastic city and you shouldn't hesitate for a moment in venturing out for an explore.

Anne Frank’s House

Most of us are aware of the famous story of a young Jewish girl called Anne who, along with her family, spent most of WWII hiding out in the attic of an Amsterdam townhouse. Hers is a beautiful story of hope, survival and strength – and the tiny space in which she lived and wrote for so long is a must see when visiting the city.

Visit a Coffee Shop

When travelling to another city it is custom to sample the local delights, those one or two things that a city is famous for. In Rome it would be the amazing Gelatos, or a trip to Vienna wouldn’t be complete without sampling its famous hot chocolate; arguably this applies to Amsterdam as well and their local delight could be said to be available in its Coffee Shops. Though it is indeed not for everyone and even if not partaking in what they’re selling it is still well worth going in for a look!

The Van Gogh Museum

This museum contains the largest collection of Van Gogh paintings and drawings in the world. Right in the middle of the city it is an easily accessible and relatively cheap experience. So whether you’re a die-hard Van Gogh enthusiast or taking your first tentative steps into the world of art, this is an unforgettable experience.

Chill Out in Vondelpark

A verdant expanse right in the middle of the city, rivalling Central Park though on a slightly smaller scale. You’re sure to see some weird and wonderful sights in this place and in summer it is a great spot just to lie down and soak up the sun. Amsterdam’s youth will be out here in force, and with almost everyone’s grasp of English being second to none, chances are a friendly face will be stumbled on at some stage.
